Places you will visit

Day 1 - Sigiriya Exploration

Sigiriya

At the break of dawn, your journey will commence towards Sigiriya, famously known as “The Lion’s Rock.” This exceptional site, hailed as the 8th World Wonder, was chosen by King Kasyapa in the 5th century AD to serve as his citadel. Emerging from the landscape, this renowned rock stands tall at over 200 meters, exerting its dominance over the surrounding terrain. For 18 years, the king ruled from this rock fortress, making it an indelible part of the island’s history.

The engineering marvel of Sigiriya is evident, with its striking wall murals and the awe-inspiring lion’s paws showcasing remarkable art and architecture. The panoramic view from the summit of the surrounding landscape is nothing short of breathtaking. The palace and its splendid gardens, along with the meticulous design of the encompassing landscape, are unrivaled. Sigiriya has been honored as the 8th wonder of the world and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it an essential visit for all travelers.

Following your exploration, you’ll check in at your hotel in Sigiriya.

Minneriya National Park

In the evening, your adventure continues with an evening safari at Minneriya National Park. The period from May to October is the optimal time to visit Minneriya National Park, coinciding with the renowned gathering of wild elephant herds. This gathering is celebrated as the largest congregation of Asian Elephants known globally. During the dry season, particularly in August and September, up to 300 elephants can be witnessed within a relatively small area around the extensive Minneriya Reservoir. This Elephant Gathering is a breathtaking spectacle, etched in the memory of all fortunate enough to witness it for the rest of their lives. The park is also home to 24 mammal species and over 170 bird species. Among the 25 reptile species recorded here, 8 are exclusive to the park.

After your safari adventure, return to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2 - Exploring Pidurangala

Pidurangala

The following morning, after a hearty breakfast, you’ll venture to Pidurangala to behold the most incredible view of Sigiriya. Pidurangala Rock mirrors the famed Sigiriya Rock in many aspects, both being volcanic hills that rise from the Sri Lankan wilderness, rich in historical significance. Pidurangala Rock is a mere 20-minute walk from Sigiriya. In the opinion of many, the vista from the summit of Pidurangala surpasses that of Sigiriya.

Climbing Pidurangala Rock not only completes the narrative of King Kasyapa’s reign but also offers an opportunity to explore a more natural setting, visit cave temples, witness what was once the world’s largest brick reclining Buddha, and engage with history without the crowds. The entire experience typically takes about 2 hours to complete.

Subsequently, you will check out from your accommodation and proceed to visit the Dambulla Golden Cave Temple.

Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temple

Referred to as the “Golden Temple,” this UNESCO World Heritage Site is situated in the central plains of Sri Lanka, within the cultural triangle. The history of this site dates back to the 3rd to 7th centuries BC, with new evidence indicating even older occupation. The striking rock cave temple complexes are remarkably well-preserved and leave visitors in awe. The rock soars 160 meters above the surrounding plains and boasts over 80 documented caves in the vicinity. The main attractions are spread across five caves, each housing statues and paintings primarily related to Buddha and his life.

These include a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of deities, such as Vishnu and Ganesha. The sprawling murals cover an area of 2,100 square meters, depicting scenes like the temptation by the demon Mara and Buddha’s inaugural sermon.

After this enlightening visit, you will return to your hotel or proceed to the airport.
